MASTER MASON
New York-based master mason Kevin Towle specializes in natural, dry-laid masonry that doesn’t over-power, but rather melds perfectly with the landscape. Whether he’s building stone walls that arch gracefully over rises and around trees, or entry walkways and patios that complement a house and garden, his work reflects an artist’s eye with a master mason’s expertise.
A renaissance man of the “rural arts,” his love and appreciation for stonework was formed at an early age as a faculty child at a New Hampshire school. A former country estate, the school had magnificent stone walls and buildings that local lore said 50 Irish stone masons labored more than two years to create.
Following teen years spent in rural Kenya where his father taught physics, Kevin honed his skill as an arborist specializing in pruning orchards before finally pursuing his interest in masonry. Largely self-taught, he worked briefly with Connecticut mason Bill Merry. In 2008, Kevin was part of the Westchester Arts Council’s Set in Stone exhibition which featured the art, craft, and history of stone building and focused on a few local master masons and their work.
