The Old Town of Lamu, Kenya is a magical place, drawing visitors from around the world. This historic town, which dates back to at least the 12th century, was declared a National Monument in 1980 and was recognized by UNESCO in 2001 by being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As travelers explore Lamu, they will discover that the unique fiber of the Old Town is held together by the historic buildings and the traditional handicrafts, some still serving their original purpose. Traditional sailing dhows still provide transportation from the airport on a neighboring island; traditional coral rag structures sill line the narrow streets of Old Town.

Even more importantly, these traditions are the mainstay of Lamu’s economy, and their loss would be devastating. Volunteer vacationers can play a key role in seeing that these traditions survive, prosper and continue to provide the basis for a sustainable economy in Lamu.

Adventures in Preservation, along with the Lamu World Heritage Site and Conservation Office, is offering a hands-on volunteer vacation, Re-Discoving the Soul of Swahili Tradition, scheduled for November 14-27, 2010. This vacation experience is designed to teach traditional skills to volunteers and community members while work is completed on a historic coral rag residence in Old Town.
